Should I Get My Eyes Checked If I Have Good Vision?

If you have seemingly perfect vision, there’s no need to visit an optometrist, right? Wrong. The truth is, whether you have 20/20 vision or not, everyone under the age of 60 should have their eyes examined every two years. Not only is this recommended by our doctors, it’s recommended by the American Optometric Association. If you’re wondering why these bi-annual eye exams are so important, we’re here to explain all of the reasons why.

Why Are Eye Exams Important?

Regular exams play an important role in identifying underlying conditions within your eyes and body. Believe it or not, a number of diseases including some that lead to blindness, may not show noticeable symptoms. That being said, the only way to truly protect yourself is to get the opinion of an eye doctor. Keeping up with regular eye exams can help you get treatment for current issues that could prevent more damaging health problems in the future. A few of the common diseases that could go undetected are:

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the leading cause of vision loss and can only be diagnosed by a doctor. Glaucoma often shows no symptoms, so you may not realize there is a problem until you begin experiencing vision loss.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of severe, permanent vision loss in people over the age of 60. This disease tends to get worse over time, however, visiting an eye doctor regularly can help with early diagnosis. Treating macular degeneration early on can lessen the severity of this disease over time.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure and hypertension are known to affect vision. In many cases, high blood pressure can be diagnosed through an eye doctor, which could save you from other serious medical issues like heart disease, diabetes, or stroke.

Diabetes

Diabetes shows no visible symptoms, however, eye doctors can check for this disease by examining the blood vessels of the eye. Diabetes can lead to a number of health issues including diabetic retinopathy and vision loss.

Scheduling regular eye exams is recommended for people of any age. Even if you feel very healthy, getting examined by an optometrist can help you stay that way! Whether you have had an eye exam in the past or have never been before, our team at Invision is here to help.
